FREE DRIVER PRACTICE
Practice the tee shot you want to play.
Driver practice is most useful when you choose a specific target and measure repeatable outcomes. These free drills can help organize a session without assuming that every long-game miss has the same underlying cause.
Drill 1: start-line window
Goal: observe and improve the consistency of your initial start direction.
Setup: choose a distant target and a reasonable visual start window. A correct target reference is important if you later compare results with a launch monitor.
Practice: hit ten drivers in small groups. Note which ones start within the intended window and how the curve changes their finish.
Measure: record the number of successful starts and the typical shape of the misses. A shot starting correctly but curving far from target still deserves a separate note.
Drill 2: strike-map baseline
Goal: understand how consistently you contact the driver face.
Setup: if suitable for your club and conditions, use removable impact spray or face tape according to product directions. Clean the club afterward.
Practice: hit a small number of normal drives and note the general contact zone. Avoid trying to manufacture a perfect strike location through drastic adjustments.
Measure: compare repeated strike patterns with ball flight and any measured data available. Impact location is a clue, not a full explanation of the motion.
Drill 3: one-ball fairway challenge
Goal: carry the skill into an on-course decision.
Setup: imagine a fairway between two safe boundaries on the range.
Practice: vary the target as though playing several different holes. Use one ball per imagined hole and your normal routine.
Measure: count playable tee shots, not only how many are long. Track the miss that makes your next shot difficult.
When to change the plan
If start direction improves but the ball still curves excessively, examine a different priority. If contact remains inconsistent, a coach or fitter may help validate the cause. Pair these drills with our slice guide and ball-flight basics.
